Project Background & Design Challenges
This project began with a request to design two stay units. However, due to the presence of a large harbor parking lot located very close to the site, we proposed combining a café and stay program. This suggestion eventually led to the creation of Afe de Sel.
These two programs inherently belong to opposite ends of the privacy spectrum. The stay demands intimacy and protection, while the café seeks openness and panoramic views. Reconciling these two conflicting desires within a single architectural form became the first core challenge of the project.
Moreover, architecture built along the coastline often monopolizes the sea view, blocking the ocean from the coastal road. Creating a building that remains beautiful both to its users and to passersby—without depriving the public of the natural scenery—became the second fundamental challenge.
Raising walls high erases the sea from the road; lowering them invites unwanted intrusion. Protecting privacy while preserving the coastal landscape appears logically contradictory.
Afe de Sel proposes an answer: a boundary that becomes landscape. The wall is redefined not as a tool of separation, but as a relational device mediating nature and architecture.
이 프로젝트는 기존에 스테이 두 채의 의뢰에서 시작했다. 대지에서 아주 가까운 거리에 엄청 큰 항구 주차장이 있어 카페와 스테이를 섞어서 하는게 좋겠다고 제안하여 지금의 아페드셀이 되었다.
이 두 용도는 프라이버시 측면에서 서로 반대에 속한다. 스테이의 프라이버시와 카페의 파노라마, 이 두 가지 모순된 욕망을 하나의 건축으로 어떻게 풀어낼 것인가가 이 프로젝트를 관통하는 첫 번째 과제가 되었다.
게다가 바닷가에 지어지는 건축은 바다 풍경을 독점하여 해안도로에서 바다를 가리는 상황이 빈번하게 일어난다. 자연 풍경을 마주하는 건축이 이용하는 이들과 지나가는 이들 모두에게 아름답게 보이는 것은 늘 가지는 딜레마였고 자연스럽게 두 번째 과제가 되었다.
담을 높이 쌓으면 도로에서 바다는 사라지고, 벽을 낮추면 타인의 시선이 침범한다. 해안도로의 풍광을 해치지 않으면서, 동시에 가장 내밀한 사적 공간을 만들어내야 하는 이 두 조건은 논리적으로 서로를 배제한다.
아페드셀(Afe de Sel)은 이 물음에 대해 경계가 풍경이 되는 해답을 제시한다. 벽을 단절의 도구가 아닌, 자연과 건축을 매개하는 관계적 장치로 다시 정의한 것이다.
Spatial Strategy: Stay & Café
The stay units were carefully positioned along the sloped terrain. By elevating the retaining wall to railing height, we prevented downward views from above while extending the eaves to secure a broader sense of privacy.
Common condensation issues caused by retaining walls on sloped sites were fundamentally resolved by separating the interior space from the retaining structure itself.
The café, in contrast, was arranged to overlap key sea-view positions, allowing people and nature to coexist within a single panoramic scene. From the retaining wall edge, one can observe the sea, the modern café interior, the exposed concrete ceiling at the entrance, and the courtyard’s natural landscape. As people move through the space, the sea and courtyard interweave, creating Afe de Sel’s own dynamic and living scenery.
스테이는 경사지형을 따라 내려 앉히고 위에서 내려다보이지 않게 옹벽을 난간 높이로 올린다면 처마를 내어 보다 넓은 프라이버시를 확보했다.
경사지의 건축에서 주로 발생하는 옹벽의 결로로 인한 문제는 실내공간을 옹벽에서 분리하여 원천적으로 차단하였다.
카페는 바다를 보는 위치를 겹치게 배치하여 사람과 자연이 어우러진 풍경을 가질 수 있도록 했다. 바다, 모던한 카페 실내, 피죽 노출콘크리트 천장을 가진 카페 진입부, 중정의 자연. 이를 옹벽에 붙은 자리에서 바라보면 오고 가는 사람과 바다가 중정의 자연을 통해 보이면서 살아 움직이는 아페드셀만의 풍경이 되리라 기대했다.
Form, Boundary & Framed Landscape
Afe de Sel embraces an attitude in which the boundary itself becomes landscape—allowing scenery to be discovered between the sea and architecture.
The decision to move beyond rigid straight lines and rectangular forms was intentional. By softening the rigidity of linear walls, the architecture enables the landscape to unfold from multiple perspectives.
The exposed concrete ceiling at the café entrance pays homage to the traces of excavated earth. Acting as an architectural object, it establishes a distinct spatial layer between the courtyard and the sea, framing the relationship between café and ocean.
As weather shifts, seasons change, and visitors bring their own colors and movements, these layers overlap to create a scene unique to this place—one that we hope becomes the reason visitors return and fall in love with Afe de Sel.
아페드셀은 바다와 건축 사이에서 풍경이 발견될 수 있도록 경계 스스로 풍경이 되는 태도를 가진다. 직선과 사각형의 형태에서 벗어나 자유로운 형태를 택한 이유도 직선 벽이 가진 경계의 경직성에서 벗어나 어느 방향에서 봐도 풍경이 발견될 수 있도록 함이었다.
카페 입구의 피죽노출 콘크리트 천장은 땅을 파낸 흔적을 오마주한 것이다. 그것은 오브제가 되어 중정 자연과 바다 사이에서 별도의 층위를 가지며 카페와 바다를 프레임화하는 역할을 한다. 날씨의 변화, 계절의 변화, 손님들의 패션이 오버랩되면서 여기서만 발견되는 풍경이 되어 방문객들이 사랑하는 이유가 되길 기대하였다.
