클라이언트는 맞벌이와 육아, 그리고 대도시 환경에 상당한 피로도를 가진 부부였다.

설계를 의뢰한 동기를 보면 아이들의 성장 환경에 대한 관심과 가족과 많은 시간을 보내고 싶은 바램이 크다는 걸 알 수 있었다. 이는 단독주택을 짓기 위해 의뢰하는 일반적인 부모들의 바램과 상당부분 닮아 있었다. 다만 일반적인 그들과 달랐던 부분은 아이들의 아빠가 건축학과 출신으로 건축에 대한 이해도가 상당하다는 것이었다.

아이들의 엄마 역시 효율적인 공간구성보다도 재미있고 특별한 공간을 요구하였다. 설계초기에 약간의 질의응답을 서면으로 받는데 이때는 이런 사항을 크게 염두에 두지 않고 예산에 맞춰서 단층형태로 자연과 조화될 수 있는 계획안을 설계했었다. 첫 계획안 미팅 후 알게 된 것은 아파트와는 다른 공간적 경험에 대한 갈증과 나만의 독특한 공간에 대한 소유 욕구였다. 이에 경사지를 활용한 스킵플로어 방식의 적극적으로 활용과 내외부 공간의 다양한 접근방식으로 공간적 경험이 가능하게 하였고 아지트같은 안방의 구성과 아이들만의 마당을 계획하여 그들의 꿈꾸는 공간이 가득한 집이 될 수 있게 계획하였다.

Paradox of nature

 

The client wanted to leave the city with his family and live in the nature, so he asked us for the site near the forest. However, a development plan has been planned around the site to undermine nature and they are in a perplexed situation. In other words, they wanted to live in nature, but it became an ironic situation where nature was lost.

 

 

설계를 시작한지 서너 달 뒤 날벼락 같은 소식을 받았다. 뒷산 전체에 주택 10채의 개발행위심의가 접수되었다는 것이다. 설계하고 있는 대지 바로 뒤편에 9미터가량의 옹벽을 세워 도로를 만들고 산 대부분의 산림을 걷어내고 주택필지를 개발하는 내용이었다. 프로젝트를 접어야할지 개발업자와 기나긴 싸움을 해야 할지 고민의 상황이 시작되었다.

그러나 위기는 곧 기회라고 하지 않았던가, 어떻게든 상황을 반전시키고자하는 마음이 간절했고 이는 곧 역설이라는 콘셉트로 이어지게 된 계기가 되었다.

 

We were saddened by this situation and wanted to find an architectural solution. The method was to paradoxically express the preciousness of nature through architecture. Specifically, we tried to express the meaning of paradox by means of morphological contradiction.

 

 

 

 

경사대지에 평평한 대지를 새로 구축하고 그곳에 집을 짓는 평범한 형태를 반대로 뒤집는 것이다. 

 

 

 

 

역설1)의 개념은 형태적 모순(Oxymoron)의 방법으로 구체화하였다.

경사대지에 평평한 대지를 새로 구축하고 그곳에 집을 짓는 평범한 형태를 반대로 뒤집는 것이다. 즉 평평한 대지는 집이 되고 그 위에 집의 형태는 자연이 되게 하는 것이다. 하얀 박공형태의 집은 나무를 품은 외부공간으로 구성하였고 평평한 대지 속에 들어있는 집은 경사지에 순응하는 스킵플로어방식으로 계획함으로써 자연과 조화를 이루고자 하였다.

 

It is a general idea that the earth is a space that houses nature, and the house is a space that houses human beings. In order to overturn this idea, we planned the earth as a space for human beings and the house as a space for nature. Then we can think of the following.

“What is it for human beings and what is for nature?”

This is the question of the relationship between man and nature. Through this, we can reconsider the preciousness of nature.

 

 

 

 

 

하얀 박공형태의 집은 나무를 품은 외부공간으로 구성하였고 평평한 대지 속에 들어있는 집은 경사지에 순응하는 스킵플로어방식으로 계획함으로써 자연과 조화를 이루고자 하였다.

이런 형태적 모순을 통해 집에서 자연은 무엇인가라는 질문을 스스로 가지길 바랐고 이는 자연의 소중함을 역설하는 것이기도 했다.

하지만 예산의 부족으로 3채로 구상했던 계획안은 2채로 축소되었고 거의 껍데기만 있던 하얀 박공형태의 헛집같은 형태는 어느 정도 집의 지붕역할을 하는 것으로 변경되면서 개념적 형태는 그 분위기가 다소 줄어들었다.

1) 여기서 역설(Paeadox)은 역설법(Oxymoron), 반어법(Irony)을 모두 포함하는 상위개념을 말한다. 건축주의 상황은 상황적 역설(Irony)에 해당하고 건축개념으로 사용한 것은 형용모순(Oxymoron)에 해당하기 떄문이다. 중요한 것은 자연을 강조하기 위해 해석과 주제결정(Concept)에 역설(Paradox)을 사용하였다는 것이다.
